Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

Oh JLA, the heartbreak that you put me through.. Sigh.

This next installment in the Dark Elements Series picks up a couple weeks after White Hot Kiss leaves off. The battle between Paimon and the Wardens where Roth sacrificed his life is still fresh in Layla's mind. She misses him more than she cares to admit, yet Zayne is always there for her. He's helping her to forget about Roth, the demon that she had her first kiss with, the one that understood and accepted her for who she is. She thinks that she is starting to move on.. until Roth shows up at her home. The home of the Wardens, his enemy. She is so excited to see him, but something about him has changed. Everything that they shared together is pointless, because he tells her it meant nothing to him. She was only a way to ease his boredom. Ugh JLA, are you serious?! I didn't like Zayne from the first book, and now I have to read about this douche canoe and Layla trying to have a relationship with each other, while Roth is obviously in love with her. It's traumatizing, seriously. Roth returns to school as if nothing happened. But now there is another problem, something that is changing her classmates and teachers. A Lilin was born the night of the ritual with Paimon, and it has returned to the school to steal souls. Can Roth, Layla, and Zayne come together to find this creature before her entire school are turned into wraiths? Or is it Layla herself, with her changing powers, the one stealing the souls? Dammit, thankfully JLA is allowing her readers to choose who Layla will end up with, because if it turns out to be Zayne, I cannot promise to control myself in the final review of this wonderful series. Just saying. The plot line was wonderful as always, the characters are well written- complex and real, and the world is phenomenal. Modern day D.C. with a supernatural twist. I fully recommend this series to everyone- read it! It will not disappoint. JLA has made herself my favorite author- hands down! <3

"The other guy shot up like an arrow, hands clenching into meaty fists at his sides. "What the hell is wrong with you?" He rounded the table, shrugging out of his zipped hoodie. "You want some of this?" Stuff always got real when the clothes started to come off."

"This just got real awkward," Stacey murmured, but her dark eyes glimmered with interest. Not as awkward, surprisingly, as when I'd licked Zayne's thumb like.. I didn't even know what. But dinner was painful. Roth and Zayne spent the whole time trading snide remarks, Sam and Stacey were too busy watching them as if each word they slung at one another was a tennis ball, and by the time I asked for a check, I was ready to throat punch someone. Mainly myself.

"You need to make this quick," Zayne said. "Because I'm not sure how much more of your presence I can stomach." Roth faked a pout. "You're so mean, Stony. Perhaps you have something shoved up your ass that you need to remove?" "Roth," I said, gripping the edge of the table. "Knock it off." "He started it." I gaped. "What? Are you guys two years old?" He glanced at a stewing Zayne and that faint twinkle in his eyes was back. "Well, he does look like he shit himself and needs his diaper changed."

Whatever control I had was stretched too taut and snapped like a rubber band pulled to its limits. I moved faster than I probably ever had. Shooting forward, I snatched the thick bible out of the man's hands. Whipping my arm back, I swung it around and the sound of what had to be the most epic biblical bitch snack on Earth echoed through the garage. Roth's surprised laugh shook me to the core. "Damn. That's getting served. In the biblical sense."

  1. Lmao "Douche Canoe ". I've only read Wait For You by JLA and it was . . . ooookkaay lol so I've always been a little apprehensive about reading more of her work. Everyone tells me to start off with the LUX series, so that I can get into her fantasy writing. This sounds so intriguing, but I need to stop being such a puss and read more fantasy and paranormal novels. Good review Morrighan!

    1. He is a total douche canoe! haha I cannot express how much I love JLA.. her writing style is so wonderful, honestly. Especially her paranormal series. Lux was great, but I personally think her Covenant Series was hands down, one of the best written paranormal series EVER! I love the whole mythology, gods and goddesses theme. And the way that she writes, with a lot of humor thrown into break up the drama/adventure is perfect. Her males are swoon worthy- complicated, pain in the ass men that are fluent in sarcasm and snark. Sigh.. I can't say enough good things about JLA! Please do give her novels a try, I promise you won't be disappointed girl (:

Thank you so much for your comment!

    2. I agree! I love JLA's writing style, and the Covenant series is also one of my most favorite paranormal series ever! The humor she throws in always makes me laugh, even if it's during a particularly serious scene!

  2. I am currently reading the book, and I agree with you! Roth should totally be the one Layla ends up with, it's so obvious that he still loves her. I really hope Roth wins, because I would seriously not be happy if Layla ends up with Zayne. As hot and cool Zayne is, I think he should just stay as Layla's best friend. For some reason, I just didn't really feel that whole connection between these two as a couple, as I had with Roth and Layla, or is it just me? Waiting until next summer for the next book is going to be a torture!

Anyway, nice review and choice of quotes! ; )

    1. I have been checking out Twitter and the #TeamRoth hashtag.. he is absolutely winning, thankfully! I agree with you whole heartedly- I never felt the connection with Zayne and Layla, even in the beginning of the first one when they were "best friends." Roth and Layla had an intense, sexy connection, and I cannot wait to see what happens in the final book. Summer cannot get here soon enough. I hope you enjoy the rest of your read, and the ending. It was a crazy twist that I was not expecting at all (:
Thank you so much for your comment, and I will be watching for your review when you finish!

    2. No problem! I can't wait to finish this book, but then again the sooner I finish it, the longer I am going to have to wait for the next book! It was torture waiting for STC, but now that the guy who Layla ends up with are in the reader's hands, the wait is going to so much more tortures!

  3. Okay you guys are sooo making me want to pick these books up. I'm just so nervous about reading paranormal and fantasy. Wait her books or paranormal right? lol. Anywho, I don't read much from these genres, and ever since I started blogging I've been trying to break myself out of that. I so need some good recommendations on where to start to get into these genres!

    1. Doooooo it! haha The Covenant Series is wonderful. If you like mythology at all, then this is the series to go with. It's abundant with Gods, Goddesses, demi-gods, and stories of mythology set in modern day. Filled with well researched mythological history, wonderful characters, a crazy twisted plot line, and a phenomenally built world- I really can't recommend Covenant enough! There are five books in this series, and I went through them in less than two days! Paranormal and urban fantasy are my favorite genres, but I could see myself reading them, even if I wasn't a huge fan of those book styles. Have you read any books from these genres at all girl?

  4. I'm really into mythology. One of my favorite books is The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller, I don't know if you've heard or read this book already, but it is BEAUTIFUL. Yes! I've read books from the genre, and I enjoy them, but I find myself always steering away from it. I guess I'm just stuck in my comfort zone, but I need to get the hell out of it. I seriously need something new in my life lol. I'm adding the Covenant series to my TBR so I can remember to pick it up after I read the LUX series.

    1. Then you would probably really like The Covenant Series! The Lux Series definitely threw me off at first.. the whole aliens thing. I read the synopsis and was like.. hmm, E.T.? But it turned out amazing, I don't know how she pulled off making aliens sexy, but she totally did! Good luck with your new TBRs. I look forward to reading your reviews and hearing your thoughts (:

  5. I'll be getting the first bind up soon. Well, hopefully. I'm throwing in on my christmas list, so I'll definitely let you know what I think about it. I'm a little nervous about the Aliens, but I've literally heard nothing but good things. Wish me luck! lol

    1. haha Don't be nervous.. JLA pulls off the aliens perfectly! Do you have a Nook by chance? I know there is a way to loan books out to friends on it, but I've never done it.

  6. I read one of her adult novels and I enjoyed it a lot... the whole love triangle thing really isn't my forte but it does sounds good. :)

    1. Love triangles have gotten so frustrating.. it seems a lot of YA novels use them and I hate it. This series didn't start off like that, in fact, White Hot Kiss, the first book was wonderful. And now this one.. I can't just give up reading a series because it gets frustrating.. my natural curiosity always wins out in the end! I'm just hoping she chooses the right guy in the end (:
